In a recent blog post by Joseph Mills, the group product manager of the Google Play store, it has been announced that video game publishers are now permitted to sell NFT games on the platform. Mills expressed the store’s delight in updating its policy to facilitate transactions involving blockchain-based digital content within apps and games on Google Play. Google Play Store Welcomes NFT Games Despite Restrictions Imposed by Other Platforms
While other platforms have imposed restrictions on NFT games, Google Play Store has taken a different approach. In 2018, the store banned crypto mining apps, and in 2020, it removed the Bitcoin Blast video game due to “deceptive practices.” Apple’s App Store also stated that NFTs purchased outside of the App Store cannot offer special benefits in games, and any game selling NFTs within the App Store must pay a 30% fee to Apple.
These actions and statements led many industry experts to believe that mobile NFT games were facing challenges. However, Google Play Store’s recent policy update clarifies that NFT games are indeed welcomed on Android devices, as long as they adhere to specific guidelines.
